What Inspires Me? How Do I Make It?
Usually, I find inspiration in nature around me. I observe, and I listen, I explore, and paint. I love to learn new painting skills, but the Serti silk painting technique will be always my favorite one.
About the Artist.
Irina grew up in Russia, near Moscow. She was inspired to pursue Aerospace engineering as a career owing that to the city being a hub for ‘science and Russian aviation”. She studied math and physics in Russia at MITP (also known as the MIT of Russia) and at the University of Notre Dame near Chicago. She moved to Southern California in 2016 and lives in Irvine.
From an early age, she possessed a passion for painting and knew that she wanted to express herself through art. Along with her technical studies, she took many courses and workshops at the fine arts departments, always devoting her time to painting to quench her thirst for the arts. With a love of nature and her personal exploration of the environment, she aims to express the meditative nature of landscapes as well as the lyrical beauty of flowers.
She tries to capture nature’s peaceful spirit using different media and spent a few years searching for the “right one” until she discovered silk painting which quickly become her focus. She fell in love with the medium, mastered the technique, and developed her unique and recognizable style. Irina’s work is a part of many private collections, and she has received recognition in her solo exhibitions and juried shows in the US.
Currently, she is balancing her life between working her day job as a biomedical data scientist for ostomy care solutions, being a devoted single mother enjoying a wonderful time with her little child, and following the passion to be an artist.

Statement.
Silk painting has been a primary fascination for me for over a decade. I enjoy exploring the diverse effects that come when I apply paint to silk. This, further, sparks my creativity. Some of my work focuses on nature and are inspired by landscapes, other works are more imaginative. I am interested in the emotional impact of composition and its ability to enhance the meditative influence by arranging shapes and colors and bringing into play the diversity of forms. I find that silk painting is the best medium to do that.
Serti Technique.
The technique that I use is called “the Serti technique”.
The Serti ( is a French word for “fence” or “enclosing”) is the silk painting technique where designs are formed with gutta or resist liner. I studied this process in Russia, the country which is known for cultivating the Serti technique and introducing it to Western Europe. Indeed this technique, so popular nowadays in France, came to Paris through members of the Russian Czar’s family. During the Bolshevik Revolution, members of the Czar’s family dispersed throughout Europe. Many fled to Paris, bringing with them the secrets of the Serti silk painting.
Inspiration ideas are all around us – everywhere an artist ventures, who they speak with, what they experience, and everything an artist does outside of the art field.
